Free for the Taking: Idea Drop Zone

Characters need to take a break from acting every so often. Here's where you'll find them hanging out. Just watch out for the fanfics.

Free for the Taking: Idea Drop Zone

Postby Gustavo » October 4th, 2014, 1:18 pm

Ever have an idea for a character, plot or scenario that you think would be great but you're not really 'in love' with enough to invest in it?

Well this is the place for you to unload those spontaneous (and non-spontaneous) ideas! This can help give other people develop new ideas for themselves, but also the ideas here are free for the taking to do what you want with them ( or do nothing!). If you do take an idea, or get inspired by anything in here, a tip of the hat to who originally created the idea is always nice but not necessary. Anyway, make a post, include anything that helped inspired the idea, then drop it in here.

As always, have fun with stuff.

I stumbled upon this image http://i.imgur.com/0ou6m52.gif while sick with a cold, and doped up on cold meds, cough drops and sore throat lozenges. One of those (Get rid of Cable) commercials from Direct TV had come on the TV when I should have been working on more important things, and then I started to just dump what came into my head into the FBAwiki chat room.

this is a honey badger
http://i.imgur.com/0ou6m52.gif This is a honey badger on drugs
or it might just be slightly intoxicated and have an itchy back
in any case

Kingsley Wolfe: Nah, he's dancing because he doesn't give a fuck what people think of him :)

Gustavo_afk: Don't be an itchy, drunken, pill popping, dancing honey badger

You'll wake up one morning in Nevada and find yourself married to the Cobra you met in a casino's bar the previous night. You'll sit down and then have to seriously re-evaluate your life. After a combination of rehab, midlife crisis and support from your Cobra wife/spouse, you'll find a steady job with a decent wage.

Kingsley Wolfe: XD

Gustavo_afk: Your Cobra wife ends up pregnant, you'll have one cobra/honeybadger child. your parents don't approve and the fallout causes a rift between your family and inlaws that lasts many years. You make arrangements with a fertility clinic to make sure you have also a pure honeybadger & pure cobra offspring. Things are good but the mortgage payments, bills and the cost of three kids puts a toil on the family finances. Then your hybrid child picks up a basketball and everything changes

and that's how ( insert name here) started down the path of joining the FBA

Feel free to steal character idea. do it, someone take it.

Qovapryi: A cobra/honey badger hybrid?

Gustavo_afk: yeah. why not?

Hotel Kinto: A lifelong battle with schizophrenia as the two sides battle for dominance inside his psyche

Qovapryi: I'm not EXTRA fond of different genus hybrids.
But that's just me. :)
If someone else will do that, I might love it.
XD

Gustavo_afk: well its out there now; someone take it its free

Kingsley Wolfe: XD

Paul Bullshep: cobra/honey badger hybrid would be sweet and deadly.

Leaving some here as well - not so much concrete ideas as possible sources of inspiration.

Speaking of honey badgers, what I'd personally like to see is a honey badger who is very much not the stereotypical honey badger - someone who could respond to the whole "honey badger don't care" schpiel with "I care :[". I even managed to come up with a decent background for them (about how some honey badgers managed to shoot themselves in the foot due to their toughness and ferocity not quite working with the rest of society), though I'm not sure how well it'd fit into the whole FBA 'verse.

Another idea which could help spark other ideas: pretty much all of the bird centres in the FBA are actually members of bird species which are often quite small (e.g. like how Joseph Davis is a finch). Nothing inherently wrong with that (in fact part of me finds the idea of a gigantic finch hilarious), but I'd like to see more avian centres that are members of big bird species - e.g. ratites in general, albatrosses, condors... maybe even terror birds, if you're feeling bold.

A character in love with all things 1980's (this is similar to a 'joke' character I mentioned before... a whippet nicknamed Devo). The character would have a mullet, break-dance with parachute pants, insist on wearing only Converse sneakers, own a collection of Koosh balls, and wear fingerless gloves. Or maybe have a sparkling glove on one paw, if you wanna go that extreme. Oh and say "Not!" a lot in disagreement, as in "You're gonna score against me. Not!"

Ah the 80s... nostalgia.

let me tell you about the Chrysopelea. It is a genus of reptiles containing flying snakes! Flying snakes are technically better gliders than flying squirrels, and can make turns in mid air! some of these like the Paradise flying snake and Ornate Flying Snake can be quite colorful and have very striking patterns. Bet one of these snakes could do well in a dunk contest.

if snakes aren't your thing and still want something that glides and isn't a reptile, flying squirrel or sugar glider? try the Colugo!

Another two! Technically these were for the same character but I have no idea if I'm going to use the character, so here's some character/plot hooks for free!

While Australia is most commonly associated with the aboriginal species that evolved there (and justifiedly so, as they are unique to the continent), they are far from the only inhabitants of the country. In fact, the majority of the population is made up of the descendants of European immigrants, as far back as when the land was settled by the British in the late 18th century. Over time considerable Asian, Middle-Eastern and Pacific populations have developed as well; as it stands, Australia is currently a melting pot of a variety of cultures and influences.

(Translation: Where's the Australians that are of European species? Logically there should be a ton of them!)

Wyverns are a European variety of dragon, distinguishable from their six-limbed cousins by having only four. Like bats and birds, a wyvern's wings and arms are the same limbs. Traditionally wyverns were seen as inferior to the six-limbed variety; after all, having separate wings and arms would have considerable advantages in a lot of aspects, would they not?

However, in the sporting world, the five-limb rule has changed this. With the adoption of the rule by several major sporting leagues (including the FBA and the EFBL), controversy has erupted in the draconic population of Europe. And where the six-limbed dragons are no longer allowed to play, the wyverns have leapt at the chance to fill their niche.

Lets talk about....the Maleo bird. [ https://i.imgur.com/08MGxAD.jpg ] (Macrocephalon maleo) It is native to an Indonesian island. this bird nests in the open sandy areas, volcanic soils or beaches that are heated by the sun or geothermal energy for incubation! These birds, when they hatch are -totally independent- and on their own, the parents don't stick around to raise the chicks. Getting around to hatching is no walk in the park either. when it's egg eviction time, these chicks have no egg-tooth. what does that mean? it means these chicks have to -kick- their way out of the shell, and then they find out they've been buried alive and need to dig their way out. kinda like that scene in Kill Bill 2. [ https://i.imgur.com/vxdPj85.jpg ]

Now, take a look at Quokkas [ https://imgur.com/a/AixyJ?gallery ] look how happy these guys are! The quokka was one of the first Australian mammals seen by Europeans, and when they were discovered, they were mistaken for giant rats. [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quokka ] They got no fear of humans.

Have you ever heard of Heck Cattle? [ https://i.imgur.com/YsY9rHQ.jpg ] This breed of cattle was developed by two German zookeepers, the Heck brothers, in the 1920s-30s tried to recreate the aurochs by back-breeding various types of 20th-century cattle thought to possess aurochs-like characteristics. what they eventually got is Heck cattle, and some of them have been said to be -highly- aggressive. i know i've mentioned this a couple times in the chat and other places, but had an idea for a trans-species ball player.
Specifically a squirrel that identifies themselves as a 'rat' and has shaved their tail down, had their paws de-furred, and maybe as far as a bit of plastic surgery to make that squirrelface more rat-like.

lets play a game. it's called 'hide the hybrid'

because of FBA rules, a hybrid on a team counts as both species and could impact the team because of the Underwood rule.
An interesting story idea one could use is a hybrid that has altered their appearance to better their chances of getting into the FBA.

Would make for some good story material for someone like this to be good at the game, then be discovered to have lied about species/background.

an example: Flying fox/ red fox hybrid. this wouldn't be too bad... dye fur mainly, wing/arms might look a bit off maybe. trouble would be is that flying foxes got no tail. hybrid would have to shave and hide tail if they had a short one, or....remove it. that be a little extreme.

With some hybrids, they might be able to outright lie about their species. Fossas look like a mix between feline and weasel so a cat/weasel hybrid might be able to pose as Fossa.

Bear/canine might be an easier one to hide. there are lots of canines & felines so those could be some good mixes to consider.
